paper work? I know I can get 72 hours visa free when I visit Dongguan.

my question remains whether I need to do any special application at the Chinese Consulate in Sydney prior I travel to Guangdong

Joe, you needn't go to Chinese consulate or embassy. You just need to bring your valid passport and confirmed air tickets in hands. By the way, you should inform the flight attendants that you plan to make use of 72 hours free transit at least 30 minutes before the flight lands. So the flight attendants will inform the airport in advance. After the plan arrives, you just need to follow the leading signs to apply for 72 hours free transit. It's for free. Actually, it's a stamp on your passport only.
