10 year visa/ marriage certificate

Hello my husband and I plus two kids are all living in China. My husband has been working here since 2007. We need to renew our entry permits this May. But we have just been informed that we first need to legalize our Canadian marriage certificate in Canada. We are so confused because this is the first time we have ever been asked to do this. Can you explain what we need to do and why? Secondly, are we eligible to get a 10 year one now?
Thank you

1. Jennifer, are you in China or Cananda now? If you are in China, you can go to the Canadian embassy to authenticate your marriage certificate. If you are in Canada, you should first go to the notary office to have your marriage book notarized and then have it authenticated at the Chinese embassy in Canada. As far as I know, if you want to apply for the S type, the authenticated marriage certificate is required. This has been implemented from 2013. Maybe as Canadians can apply for the 10-year multiple-entry type now, the requirements are more strict than before.

2. Yes, you are elgible to get the 10-year one. However, the remaining validity of your passport should be longer than the intended validity of the China entry permit.
