want to know if I require a visa to go into China for shopping for 1 or 2 days.

I am going to Hong Kong on the 16th of April until 23rd April. I have been told I can apply (if required) at the boarder however I was also told to apply (if required) before I leave australia. Can you tell me what I am to do please.
