Re Chinese entry permit? I am on a British Passport and arriving by Cruise liner into Shanghai

The ship arrives for only a total of 6 hours and I have no desire to get off the ship for such a short time as I have already spent time in Shanghai over the years. My Question is do I have to get any kind of Chinese visa for such an arrival. Thanks for any knowledge anyone may have about this. Paul.

Paul, does the ship only enter mainland China once at Shanghai? If it departs from another country to Shanghai and then leave Shanghai for Hong Kong / Macau / a third country and the stay does not exceed 24 hours, then you do not need the entry permit.

Thanks for the reply....However The Shipping company P & O Arcadia.....told me to get off the ship and it was NOT an option....40+ other passengers throughout the voyage were also given the same orders and they were not as able as me......I ask because I am thinking of seeking legal action against them for not making it clear enough...even their dedicated visa company they recommend did not give me the answer....something along the lines of contact the Chinese consul for exemptions....where as they should have said "IT IS MANDATORY...or you get off loaded!!
