Hi, What would be the most direct route to travel from Shanghai City Centre to Xitang?

I will be travelling to Shanghai in April and want to go to XT. Also, I am more interested in riding down the canals and seeing the night view. Is it possible to do this one one day or would I have to stay over night? Thank you so much!
