Catching a flight to Hong Kong and then back to the states.  We want to visit friends in Kunming for a few hours.  Do I qualify for the 72 hour transit visa?

Mike, the 72 hour free transit policy has not been implemented in Kunming airport, so you can't make use of it. However, as your layover does not exceed 8 hours, it's certain that the 24 hour free transit policy can be used.
