About:China Visa Application in USA

How does the process work for university professors?

Do you have a point of contact at the university that can handle the paperwork and avoid the trip to the consulate to hand in the paperwork? Specifically for Columbia University professors?

Sorry, there is no such contact point at your university. If you don't want to do the application on your own, you can entrust others or agencies to do this for you. Alternatively, you can pay attention to the latest notices posted on the website of the consulate in New York or call them directly to see if they have the plan to go to your school for field work this year.
