Boston - Shanghai-72hr-Shanghai - Tokyo- Boston? Does this qualify for 72 hours free transit?

I am flying from Boston to Shanghai and then returning 72hr Shanghai to Boston with a transfer in Tokyo.

After being denied boarding I called the Shanghai Airport Immigration Inspection office as noted above and they said NO. A transfer or transit in another country does not qualify. You must actually go through immigration and enter the country so that there is a stamp in your passport. Then you can reenter the airport through immigration and this will qualify.
