About:144-Hour Visa-Free Transit

From Boston to Shanghai via Canada and back - 144 hour transit visa?

Looking to book a flight from Boston to Shanghai leaving Monday and arriving in Shanghai on Tuesday - Departure is Boston to Montreal, Canada and Montreal to Shanghai.
then on the return on Thursday of that same week I leave Shanghai via Toronto, Canada and then Boston. Can I use the 144-hour transit visa?

Best, Roberto

You cannot. You need a visa or different flights. Canada-China-Canada is not a transit to a third country.

Thank you for the input.

Based on your input, I am now looking at a different option:

Would this work?

Boston -> Shanghai (via Montreal) -> Shangai -> Tokyo (I stay there one day) finally coming back Tokyo -> To Boston.

That's fine. In fact even BOS-YUL-PVG-BOS is OK although this may cost significant more than you getting a 10-year tourist visa.
