About:Policy for Foreigners with Immediate Family Living in China

Resident Permit Visa

My L type expires in about 2 months (May), my wife is a Chinese citizen with all of her family living in China. When my L type expires I want to apply for a family/resident type and needed to know what I need to do to get one.

Also, what is the duration of time I can live in China with my wife under the resident or family one?

Chris, I’m not sure whether you can successfully change the L type into Q type at the local entry and exit administration department because it’s not easy to do so. However, you can still give it a shot by submitting your passport, marriage certificate, application form, photo, your wife’s ID, and invitation letter from your wife. If you are granted with an Q1 type, you can apply for a temporary resident card with the 1 type. In general, the card allows you to stay for one or two years. If the department only issues you an Q2 type, you can stay in China for 180 days at most.
