About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Hong Kong to Beijing back to Hong Kong?

I am a US citizen and was looking to travel with my family from Okinawa, Japan to HK then to Beijing then Back to Okinawa. Our flight from Beijing stops in HK before departing for Okinawa. Will my myself and family be eligible for a 72 hour free transit? Can we leave the airport?

Well, it is a pity that you do not qualify for the free transit policy as your route is not regarded as a valid transit.

Does it make a difference if I live in Okinawa Japan, it is my starting and final destination. Or is it an issue bc I have a layover in Hong Kong.
