180 days Visa for a European Citizen

Hello,
I am participating in a Cultural exchange program and for that a 180 days entry permit with multiple entries is required. Unfortunately the embassy in Tokyo told us today that we can only get a 30 Days tourist entry permit and the agency we went to couldn't help us. Is there any way to get at least a 90 day entry permit?
Thanks for your help!
Paula

Paula, as the embassy told so, I think it's not easy to get the 90-day entry permit. Anyway, my suggestion is to provide more detailed supporting documents, such flight details, invitation letter or guanrantee from relevant entity in China, and so on. Then ask the consular officer whether you can apply for a 90-day type, it not, apply for a 60-day type entry permit. After you enter China, you can try to extend the L type seven days before it expires at the local Exit and Entry Administration Bureau.

Hello, thank you for your answer :) Unfortunately we brought all those things and couldn't get any but a 30 days one which is really bad actually. But thank you for your help. It seems like you really need a Japanese residence card to get onefor China. I don't exactly understand why but ok...
