2 Questions on American visiting China

I have read that once I land in Beijing, I cannot leave the city for 3days or fly to another city such as Nanning. Is that true?

I was planning to land in Beijing from Fukuoka, Japan. Spend 2days then go on to Nanning, spend 3days there (for Ban Gioc Waterfalls) and then depart from Nanning's airport to Bangkok, not returning to China afterwards. Is this even possible with any sort of Visa?

I apologize if these are silly questions, but I've read so much and it doesn't make sense to me. I just want to verify this before planning anything further.

Susan, you can't visit any other cities if you make use of 72 hours free transit in Beijing. If you plan to visit Nanning, you should apply for a L type in advance. It requires your passport, application form affixed with a recent passport photo, round-trip air tickets and hotel booking.
