About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Hong Kong to Shanghai, then back to Hong Kong

I bought tickets going from NYC to Hong Kong and back, but I would also like to visit Shanghai for a day or 2. Am I eligible for a 72 hour visa if I fly from Hong Kong to Shanghai, and then back to Hong Kong? Thanks for your help.
