About:China Visa Application Procedure and Fee

Do you need to have a ticket booked in advance?

I am a merchant seaman and when travelling can't book in advance as I often don't know when my leave will start. Can I obtain a visa first, then buy my ticket just before I go. I am an Australian citizen.

Tourist, but I would like to eventually take a year off and study a language, maybe Mandarin, maybe Japanese?

Then you need to apply for a X type. First, you need to apply from a college or school. Once you are accepted, the college or school will send you JW202 form and admission letter. Second, you need to bring these two documents together with your passport, application form and recent passport photo to apply for the X type. If you are granted with X1, then you need to change it into a temporary resident permit within 30 days after your arrival.

Thanks for that, but that won't be for a while yet, I will first go over as a tourist, which is why I was asking about applying for a tourist entry permit without buying a ticket.

If you know anyone who is in China now, you can ask him or her to write you an invitation letter so that you do not need to provide the tickets.
