About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit FAQ

From NY to Beijing to Shanghai, then back to Beijing and to NY

Please advise if one is traveling from NY to Beijing, and then onto Shanghai for less than 72 hours, but flying back to Beijing to catch a flight back to NY - can one apply for the 72 hour free transit in Beijing upon arrival and before catching the next flight to Shanghai? And, can one return back to NY as a connection through Beijing - or is a visa needed for this? Thank you
Lisa

Sorry, you are not eligible for 72 hours free transit. You should apply for a L type in advance. Aside from your passport, application form, a recent passport size photo, you should provide round-trip air tickets and hotel booking. By the way, I would suggest you apply for the 10 years L type. It costs the same but saves the trouble you apply every time from the Chinese embassy or consulate. The requirements are the same. You just need to make sure your passport is valid for at least one year.
