About:Chinese Embassy in Japan

Should I apply for a Chinese tourist visa through the US Embassy or through a travel agency?

I'm an American citizen in Japan and my Z type is expiring in April. I plan to visit Shanghai right after it expires.

Do you work in Japan? I think you can apply for the tourist L type from the embassy or conulate in Japan by providing your resident permit there.
