About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Hong Kong to Beijing for 40 hours

Im not fully clear but if I am flying from the US to HK for a few days and then do a short round trip to Beijing for 40 hours and then back to HK, does that qualify for the 72 hour free visa?

I'm afraid that your trip is not considered as a valid transit, because you departed from HK to Beijing and then back to HK. I suggest you fly from the US to Beijing, staying for a short trip, and then fly from Beijing to HK. In this case, you can make use of the 72-hour free transit.
