Could I use the 72hr free visa if I fly from Hong Kong to Beijing then from there to Thailand

I am using an US passport. We will fly to HK first then from there to Beijing stop for 3 days, then fly to Thailand. Can I use the 72hr transit or do I need to apply for a L type?
