Hello Franklin! Welcome to China! First, you need to prepare your passport, a photocopy of the passport, a filled application form glued with your recently-taken passport size photo, and other documents needed according to your visit purpose. Then go to the embassy or consulate which has jurisdicition over your residence to submit the application for the Visa.1

Then an invitation letter is required. If you can't provide it, you can use round-trip air tickets and hotel reservation instead.2
