Kevin, what's your purpose of visiting? If you are just travelling to China for leisure, an L type will be needed.1

L type is issued to those who intend to go to China as a toursit. You should go to the embassy or consulate general which has jurisdiction over your residence and submit the application documents, such as your valid passport and a photocopy of its info page, a filled application glued with your recently taken color photo, and round-trip tickets and hotel reservations.1
