how will luggages be transferred between 2 different airlines in partnership?

I'm traveling to Nanjing from US with a stop over in Pudong. I'll be flying with Delta to Pudong and then China Eastern to Nanjing. Since this is a partnership flight between the 2 airlines, will the luggage be transferred or would I need to get them from baggage claim and take them to get checked again at the counter at T1 terminal?

Usually you need to take the luggage by yourself first and then get then checked again. But sometimes if it is a connection trip (you get only one e tikcet number for the whole 2 trips), the airline would transfer your luggage directly for you. You'd better double confirm it with the airport staff when boarding.
