About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit
I have a standby ticket so my flight from pvg to syd is not confirmed. would I need a visa?

Kiwi, confirmed air ticket is required for 72 hours free transit. So I am afrai that you are not qualified for 72 hours free transit.0
