Does 72 hour free transit applies in our case?

We are using Singapore as our Asia base. Flying from UK to SG, while in SG, we are considering a 2-3 day holiday in Hangzhou, and will get a return ticket for SG-Hangzhou. Does the 72-hour free transit applies in our case?

No, your case is not eligible for the 72h visa free policy. It is regulated that the starting point and destination should be different, so a round trip doesn't fit.
