1. You should apply for the L type. If the invitation letter is issued by an individual in China, the personal signature instead of the official stamp will be OK.
2. The invitation letter can be a printed copy. However, the officer in the embassy may ask you to provide the original copy of the letter if he views it's necessary.
3. By providing the invitation letter, you don't need to submit the tickets.
4. You can apply for the Z type but it may be harder than applying for the L type. Anyway, if you decide to work in China in the future, I suggest you apply for the Z type so that you don't have to get out of China again to reapply.
5. No, you cannot apply for the Q type.
6. In your situation, I don't think the bank certificate or other proofs of financial standing is necessary for the application. However, in some countries, it is required indeed.
7. You should submit you application to the consulate in Washington DC.

(c. Information on the inviting entity or individual (name, contact number, address, official stamp, signature of the legal representative of the entity or the inviting individual) )
what is official stamp? Is the signature same thing as official stamp if the inviting individual is a person not an organization? (My boyfriend or his family members in this case)
2. Can that letter be submitted to me electronically and have me print out here, then I submit it for the application? or it has to be mailed to me?

3.Since discounted tickets are generally not refundable, Do I book tickets before or after the application? Do I have to buy roundtrip tickets before applying for (L) type or is buying one way there is enough? Considering one way ticket costs half less and I want to live with my boyfriend for a while to see how well our relationship works out so I don't know the exact date of leaving. If all goes well, we will get married and I will seek employment.

4. Will it be better for me to apply for a (Z) type instead so if we do decide to stay together I don't have to change visa type. He has a spot for me in his friend's small company.

5. We are not married, so I cannot apply a Q type for family reunion.

6. I don't have a lot of saving, and not employed at this time, but my boyfriend and his family will pay for most of it. Do I have to show any proof of funds? I heard that in certain countries, their Immigration officer may ask for, is that true AND is that proof needed for the application?

7. I live in Virginia, can I drop off my application in consulate in NY?

I hope I'm just overthinking about the complexity of obtaining a Chinese visa.

Anticipating for answers and thanks for helping
