About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit FAQ

Visa requirement vs 72 hour transit visa exemption

Coming in to Shanghai on a cruise ship, and leaving the next day evening, is a visa required? Or does the 72 hour transit visa exemption apply, and no visa is required. Is one able to travel by cruise ship and stop at Shanghai (for 30 hours) and Hong Kong (for 30 hours) under the 72 hour transit visa exemption, without requiring a visa? This question is for a USA traveler.

This is still part of the Q. continued, cruise ship to HK, then fly to Narita and back to USA. Can I use the 72 hour free transit? Or does it only apply to air travel?

Yuen, 72 hours free transit isn't applicable if you take cruise in and out of mainland China. By the way, your total stay is more than 24 hours so that you can't make use of 24 hours free transit too. In your case, you need to apply for a G type in advance.

For your return trip, you are ok for 72 hours free transit if you stop at any airport where 72 hours free transit policy has been implemented. However, you have to make sure that your flights don't stop at any other city in mainland China.
