About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit FAQ

2 1/2 layover in Beijing on return trip to United States. How about 72 hours free transit?

Hi, We are traveling from the United States to Thailand and Cambodia in February. On our return trip on March 2nd we fly from Siem Reap, Cambodia to Beijing. We have a 2 1/2 day layover in Beijing. Then on March 4th we fly from Beijing to Chicago (U. S. is a 3rd country, right?) and then another flight to our home in Houston. Would we be eligible for the 72 hour Free Transit? Or did we mess that up by transferring through Beijing on the return trip home instead of on the way to Thailand? Cambodia, China, and United State are 3 different countries. But the U. S. is our citizenship. Our layover is less than 72 hours. Thanks in advance for any help on this. We hate to apply one if we don't have to.

Thanks for your reply. I went to the Houston Chinese Consulate and they told me they didn't think I was eligible for the 72 hour Free Transit because we were coming back to the U.S right after Beijing and it had to be a 3rd country other than our home country to be a transit. The girl seemed very unsure of herself. I tried to explain that we started the return from Thailand and Cambodia. transit through Beijing and the USA was the 3rd country, even the 4th.

Who might I call to research this further? We are a little paranoid to show up in Beijing without the VISA when the consulate won't confirm that we are eligilble for the free 72 hour transit

I think your answer is correct and the Consulate is wrong and the office isn't very familiar with the policy. Our return itinerary is Cambodia-Beijing, China- USA (home country).

If your itinerary is Cambodia-Beijing-USA, then I think that 72 hours transit is eligible for you.
