About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit FAQ

Does this 72-hour policy apply to passengers on cruise liners?

We will be in Shanghai arriving by P&O Arcadia at 08h00 departing 18h00 the same day, 12th March 2015 and will have onward travel documents to Hong Kong. We hold British passports.

The 72-hour free transit polict does not apply to passengers on cruise liners, but as you only stay in China for less than 24 hours, you can enjoy the 24 hour free transit policy.

For your information, as the newly amended Exit and Entry Administration Law of PRC goes, foreigners holding connected passenger tickets and are in transit to a third country or region by an international aircraft, ship or train via China and staying for no more than 24 hours in China without leaving the port of entry, or staying in the specific zones approved by the State Council within the prescribed time limit may be exempt from Visa.

I had put out other feelers and these are two replies I have now received which I have copied. I would like comments please, particularly you An,n as to where your information comes from. I had hoped it was correct as the fee is very expensive, especially for me as I live in France and have to get an agent to do it for me.

Reply from the Chinese Embassy in London:
For cruising, please apply for a Chinese visa.

Reply from the Agency
I have researched this request and I can confirm that exemption is not offered to Cruise Passengers unless it is in Sanya.

I realise that the Embassy and the agent both want to sell visas.. but surely they should both give me the correct information.

Comments please. Sue
