About:China Visa Entries / Validity / Duration of Stay

I'm in Xian and need to exit mainland. I'm going to Hong Kong and will fly back to Xian

Does that break my current stay and can I fly back in to Xian and not have to go to Shanghai or another international entry port? I US citizen.

Your trip to will break your current stay. If you current hold a single entry permit, you need to apply for a new one to enter China.
From HK to Xian, there are direct flight, so you do not need to fly to Shanghai or another port and then transfer to Xian.
