There is no requirement for the bank statement for USA passport holders, so you do not need to worry about it.
A returning ticket is needed when application. Usually, a single entry Tourist L has validity of 30 days. If you want to stay longer, you can apply for a 60 or 90 days duration of stay, but you need to prepare enough documents to show you really need to stay that long.

thank you for your reply. What does prepare documents to show I really need to stay that long. I will be staying at a Tai chi school there but they can't help with letter of invitation so just sucgest getting a L type. So if you are just a tourist then what documentation can you show except may an itinerary of places you want to visit. Also now US citizens can get a 10 year one but with this can only stay 60 days at a time. Then you have to leave and reenter. Have you heard about this new 10 year one

Ryan, seriously you can't learn Tai Chi with a L type. The 3 months, 6 months and 12 months L type are double-entry or multiple-entry ones. Each duration of stay is usually 30 days too. So you still need to exit and reenter again.

Yes, I heard aout 10 years L type. It requires that the applicants must have their passports valid more than one year. Yes, its max. duration is 60 days and you need to leave and reenter too.

If you have previous entry records to mainland China, you have greater chance of applying for long-term L type. Otherwise, it's a bit difficult for you to get a 6 or 12 months L type.

By the way, it's inappropriate to study Tai Chi with a L type. You should have a F or X2 type.
