How many entries for the work visa?

I am currently waiting for my expert work permit to be approved, and will apply for the Z type once I have all of the correct documentation. My job will be as part of a music performing ensemble. Almost immediately after I'm scheduled to arrive, the group is going on a tour to Hong Kong and Taiwan.

I understand the temporary residence permit takes some time to get, so I was wondering if I'll be able to do the tour to Taiwan and re-enter China with the initial Z type.

Robert, the z type you got is a single-entry one. After you enter mainland China, you should change it into a temporary resident permit within 30 days. If you leave in 30 days, you are required to apply for a Z again.

As far as I know, there are different visa regulations or types with respect to the one country , two policies. To go to Taiwan, you might need a visa purposely for Tawain. To enter mainland , then you need your Z type to enter then after, it will be converted to a work permit only valid for mainland ...
