You can only use the passport, not the copy, to verify the identity at station.

So that means that I can't buy a ticket for someone before he comes to China, but then the tickets will be sold out already...If I buy directly the ticket at the station or in a train ticket office is it the same thing ?

You can try from the ticket office. But it won't work in the railway station if you use a copy.
