About:China Visa Application in USA

The visa application form?

The online application form seems to require, if flying into Hong Kong, proof of a hotel reservation and a copy of my plane ticket. Is this really necessary?

You mean apply to visit HK?
If so, it is not needed if you have USA passport. You enjoy a 90-day free entry to visit HK. So the application form is not needed. You can just prepare your valid hotel flights and hotel bookings in case the immigration officer requires.

No, I would fly into HK initially, but then tour other areas of China.

If so, the hotel bookings in China and ticket from HK to China and ticket leaving China are still needed for application.
