I am travelling from US to Beijing and than Beijing to Hong Kong less than 72 hrs. Is visa needed

We arrive on Mar 12th 2015 in Beijing from the US. Leave Beijing at 9:30 am, March 15th, less than 72 hrs for Hong Kong to start cruise. Can we get away with getting the 72 hour transit G type at the Beijing airport.

When will you land in Beijing?
If you land after 09:30 on March 12, you are able to enjoy the 72-hour free transit since the transfering time is less than 72 hours. If you land before that time, the transfering time is over 72 hours and you need to apply for a Transit G.
