About:

Shanghai to Shantou by train?

Will be coming from SH and prefer not to take an airplane. Is the train efficient and estimated costs?

Well, there is no direct rail between these two places. You are suggested to take a high-speed train from SH Hongqiao Station to Chaoshan High Speed Station first. Then transfer to a shuttle bus to Shantou. The whole trip will take around 11 hours. And the total tickter fare is around CNY 400 per adult.
It's not convenient for you.

So it's suggested to take a plane. There are some direct flights that can take you to Chaoshan Airport in around 2.5h. After that, a shuttle bus can take you to Shantou in 60-70min.
