British national staying in Japan on a tourist permit needs a Chinese visa

I am a British citizen staying in Japan on a tourist permit and I need one for a short stay in China. I have all the necessary documents, including invitation letter from my friend in China etc. do I need to go to the China Embassy or can I get a one though a travel agent? I have seen conflicting advice online.

You need to apply in person at the embassy based on the rules from the embassy, since you are staying in Japan just for sightseeing.
