Required return tickets - in and out different countries

It is required for me to have return plane tickets to apply for a Chinese visa, but I'm planning on going somewhere different than I came from. Can I have a plane ticket in from a country and a separate plate ticket out to a different country instead of a return ticket?

A seperate ticket to leave China is also available for the application. The ticket is just used as a proof to show that you will leave China after your visiting.
