Do I need to collect my luggage for short stopover?

I have a 9 hour stopover and I just want to be able to leave the airport (Beijing Intl) and arrive back in time for my flight without having to collect my luggage and re-check it back in... is this allowed??

Cassie, it depends on how your airlines deal with your luggage. In many cases, the airlines just transport your luggage to next plane if you buy connecting air tickets. If you have separate air tickets of two different airlines, you might be required to collect your luggage and re-check it. So I think you need to comfirm this with your airline.

Huge thanks for your quick reply, my flights were booked at the one time so I won't have to worry about my luggage, huge relief!
Since I'm travelling on Air China through Beijing, do I still need to inform them that I want to leave the airport?

Since you transfer in Beijing, so it is not needed to inform the airline that you want to leave the airport.
