visa for family visiting china on march 23, 2014?

My wife, daughter, and I are planning to visit China for 10 days on March 23, 2014. We are US citizen and live about 2.5 hours from Chicago. When should I start the application process?Does all three of us have to be present at the Chicago Consulate when apply for it?Do we qualify to apply as group type?

1. You can apply it as early as 3 months. 2. You alone can apply for it in behalf of your wife and daughter. Or you can also find a travel agent that can process the application so no need for you to drive all the way to Chicago.3. No, you are not qualify for the group type.  The Group type is the one that issued to a tourist group organized by the travel agency which comprises at least five (5) persons who must travel together both in and out of China.  The Group type is evidenced on the List of Group instead of on the individual passport.
