About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

American in japan want to fly to HK via Beijing

My question is. I want to know if i qualify for 72 hour exemption coming from okinawa, japan to beijing to hong kong back to okinawa japan is ok. Is hong kong consider a 3rd country in the trip?

HK is not regarded as a 3rd country, but it is regarded as a third region. So your trip is also qualified for the 72-hour free transit from Okinawa to Beijing and then to HK.
