visa for mainland china with a UK passport

Hello, I am a UK passport holder and am currently staying in Macau. I have a return flight booked for febuary 2015 back to the UK. I have booked flights (hongkong -shanghai 11th december 2014, shanghai - beiijing 16th december 2014, return to macau 20th december 2014....9 days total!). I have been to the chinese embassy here in Macau but they will only give me one for 7 days as i am not a resident here in macau ut my trip is 9 days total. Can anyone tell me how I can get one so I can go on this trip in December. any advice would be appreciated.
