ticket collection at beijing international airport

I will land in Beijing at 2:10pm. I would like to take the 5:57pm train from Beijing West to Taiyuan but collection requires me to be at the train station at least 2 hours before. I definitely won't be able to reach in time. Is the 2 hours really necessary? Or can I collect it at Beijing airport since there is a counter?If I want to collect the train ticket at Beijing Airport, where should I purchase the tickets online then? Is it advisable to collect at the airport?Thanks!

If you book ticket online, the ticket can only be collect at railway station, not ticket office or airport. It would take about 2 hours for you to transfer from airport to Beijing West station. It will be Ok if you can arrive station about 90min in advance. The checkin will begin about 30min in advance.

Most people advise to buy the ticket at the railway station instead. Are the trains to Taiyuan usually full this month?

November is not a peak month for transfer. You can choose to buy at station directly. If the ticket for 17:47 are sold out, may be you can choose other later one like 18:23 or 18:56. But it is still advisable to keep an eye on the ticket availbility. If you find them become limited, you can book online in advance.
