Chris, your starting point is Shanghai? If so, you can not enjoy 72 hours free transit. If you fly from your country, transit in Shanghai and then to Seoul, you can enjoy 72 hours free transit.

I'm actually flying from seoul to shanghai by China southern airways. Then I have a flight from Shanghai to Hanoi, but I have a connecting flight back in Seoul with Korean airways.

You are unable to enjoy the 72-hour free transit, since you will have a stopover in Seoul. It can be regarded as a round trip. You are suggested to apply for a Transit G in advance.
