About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Non revenue travel for a trip to China

I am interested in brining my family on a trip to China. Hawaiian airlines has flights that have a layover under 72 hours. What happens if the return flight is cancelled and we cannot return within the 72 hours. Can they extend it for another 72 hours?

it is clearly stated that you cannot do a return trip this way - transit MUST be to a third country!
