Go to Guangzhou airport from Hong Kong via Shenzhen by car. OK with 72-hr visa free stay?

A US passport holder goes to the Guangzhou airport from Hong Kong via Shenzhen by car. Then fly out to a third country such as Australia within 72 hrs. Can he apply the 72-hour free transit exemption? If yes, can he get it at the Shenzhen border? Thanks.

You are not qualified for the 72-hour free transit. That policy is only available for those using flights to make international transfer in China and just stop in one airport. You will use cars to Guangzhou via Shenzhen, so you cannot enjoy it.

You may need to apply a normal Transit G in advance.
