Going from US to HK for 2 weeks thinking of visiting China for 2 days

I am from US with US passport, planning to fly to HK In October for a trade show. I may want to visit china mainland to see factories, possibly stay there for 1-2 days before returning to HK.
What documents are needed besides my passport to do all of the above?
I was told I possibly need some type of invitation or Visa....I am not sure.

You need to apply for a F type for visiting China with your your valid passport, an application form with a recent taken photo, an invitation letter from any of the factory in China.
