Do I need a travel visa to get into Shenzhen from Hong Kong, I am an Australian citizen

Yes, a visa is needed. You can easily apply for a visa on arrival when getting to SZ, at Luohu (Lo Wu) Port, Huanggang Port, Shekou Port or Fuyong Port if you visit the city for 5 days at most.
