About:China Visa

Can we apply for a visa free transit? If so how do we obtain this?

we are flying from the UK to HongKong with a 60 stop over in Chengdu. Instructions are not very clear.

Probably you mean you want to enjoy the 72-hour free transit policy, right?
If so, you just need to tell your airline company that you want to enjoy this policy in Chengdu. Then upon reaching Chengdu, you just need to go the 72-hour free transit counter to apply for a stay permit. With it, you can leave the airport.
