Family visa S type

Hi, thanks for your excellence & informative website. Like to check is S type the only option to bring in family members to Shanghai? Currently the husband is still waiting for the residence permit in shanghai. Can the family members apply normal visa eg. L type and then do a conversion when the family members arrived in Shanghai?

If the family members want to stay for a long time, the S type is the only type. S1 holder can stay for over 180 days and S2 hold can stay for less than 180 days.

The family members can also hold the Tourist L for staying in China and the stay of duration is around one month in China.

The family can apply for a L type by using hotel booking and round trip air tickets although the husband is still waiting for the resident permit. Usually, the L type cannot be changed to other types in China, but can only extend in China. So if is not in a hurry, you are suggested to apply for a S after the husband get the resident permit.

Thanks so much for the info.
Understand that for S1 application, the inviting party (in this case) the husband need to prepare an invitation letter to support his family S1. Is there any sample of such letter that i can refer?
