Do I need a visa authorization to apply?

Hi, I was invited for an academic conference in China and I have an official letter of invitation from the organizers.

Yes, you should acquire the invitation letter from duly authorized Chinese unit. The conference sponsor may help you acquire this. It is usually issued by the foreign affairs office.
